How to Make Your Own Taco Seasoning Equivalent to a 1 oz Store Bought Packet at Home.
Hi! If you’ve been following me for long you’ll already know this, but for those who are new, welcome to Far From The Farm. I’m Mona, the Brit behind the recipes, learning life and food in the States while sharing our debt-free journey and what’s on the menu in our home today!
Taco nights have quietly become one of those dependable meals in our rotation.
They are quick, filling, budget friendly, and everyone actually eats them without complaint. On weeks where time is short and energy is lower than usual, that kind of dinner is a small win.
But there is one thing that always seems to trip me up. Those little taco seasoning packets.
I cannot count how many times I have stood in the kitchen with the pan heating, the meat ready, tortillas on the counter, only to realise the seasoning packet is gone. Again.
It always seems to happen on the busiest nights, when the last thing anyone wants is an extra trip to the store.

After enough of those moments, I stopped relying on store bought packets altogether. This small batch taco seasoning is what I make now instead.
It takes less than two minutes, uses spices we already keep on hand, and gives the same flavour and thickness as a standard 1 oz packet.
This is not a giant jar seasoning blend meant to sit forgotten in the cupboard. It is intentionally small, practical, and made fresh when you need it. Just enough for one meal. No waste. No planning ahead required.
As always, these photos are from my real kitchen here in our sweet military base home. No staged lighting or spotless marble counters. Just real life and real food made in a small space. Proof that you can feed your family well without needing a dream kitchen or fancy tools!
And just a reminder that if you’re struggling and you need help with managing your budget or starting your own debt free journey then here’s some FREE resources below you may find helpful!

- 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder

- Pinch of cayenne pepper (about 1/8 tsp or thereabouts)
- 1 tsp cornstarch
Step by Step Instructions

Step 1
Add all of the spices and cornstarch to a small bowl.

Step 2
Mix well until fully combined and there are no visible clumps, especially from the cornstarch.

Step 3
To use, brown 1 lb of ground beef as usual. Sprinkle the seasoning over the cooked meat.
Step 4
Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup water, stir well, and simmer for about 5 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the meat evenly.
That is it. Dinner is rescued!
Notes and Troubleshooting
Notes
- This seasoning is designed to match the strength and thickness of a standard 1 oz packet.
- The cornstarch helps create that familiar saucy texture when simmered with water.
- You can adjust the heat by increasing or decreasing the cayenne pepper.
Troubleshooting
- If the mixture clumps when added to meat, add a splash more water and stir gently.
- If the flavour feels too mild, add a pinch more chili powder or cumin next time.
- If it tastes too salty, reduce the salt slightly on your next batch.
Storage
- This seasoning is best used immediately.
- If needed, it can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. Stir before using, as spices can settle.
