Pizza night is a big deal around here. My husband and family love anything pizza related. Breadsticks, pizza pockets, calzones, you name it and they will happily clear the baking sheet.

One busy weeknight I’d ran out of two things I always have on hand: sugar and all purpose flour. And my bread machine was busy making three batches of my Texas Roadhouse Copycat Rolls for a big family event.
So I had to improvise based on what was actually in the pantry. The result surprised me in the best way!
A gorgeous, almost artisan style pizza dough made with honey and bread flour. Chewy, stretchy, golden, and so easy to shape. Honestly, this might be one of my favourite emergency pantry wins ever and is now in our regular meal rotation.

And it’s so cheap to make! For less than a couple of dollars you can have versatile pizza dough in the fridge in no time. Great for helping to avoid the temptation of takeout if you’ve had a busy day and don’t want to stand a cook a whole meal!
As always, these photos are from my real kitchen here in our sweet military base home. No staged lighting or spotless marble counters. Just real life and real food made in a small space. Proof that you can feed your family well without needing a dream kitchen or fancy tools!
So come into the kitchen with me and make this lovely honey sweetened pizza dough that feels a little bougie even though the ingredients are as simple as it gets!
Equipment
- KitchenAid (or other stand mixer) with dough hook and mixing bowl
- Measuring jug
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Plastic wrap
Available on Amazon.com [ad]
Ingredients
Makes 1 very Large 16 to 18 inch Pizza Base
- 1 ¼ cups warm water
- 1 tbsp honey
- 2 ½ tsp active dry yeast
- 1 tbsp olive oil plus a little extra for drizzling
- 3 cups bread flour
- 1 tsp salt
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1. Proof the yeast.

Add the warm water, honey, and yeast into the bowl of your stand mixer. Give it a quick stir, cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes.
When the mixture looks bubbly and frothy, your yeast is alive and ready to go. If it does not foam up, discard and start again with fresh yeast.

Step 2. Mix the dough.
Once your yeast is active, add in the olive oil, bread flour, and salt.

Using the dough hook attachment, mix on low to medium speed for about 5 minutes until a smooth dough forms and pulls away cleanly from the sides of the bowl.
Honey makes the dough slightly softer and a touch more elastic, so this part mixes beautifully.

Step 3. First rise.
Form the dough into a ball, drizzle with a tiny bit of oil, and cover the bowl with plastic wrap.
Let it rise for about 1 hour in a warm spot until it doubles in size.
Bread flour gives this dough an amazing rise and structure.
Step 4. Shape and Second Quick Rise.
Punch down the dough gently and shape it into your desired form. This recipe makes one large pizza base or two smaller ones.
If you want to store it in the fridge here is where you can place it in a lightly oiled ziplock food bag like I show here:

Let it rest for another 10 to 15 minutes under a damp towel or plastic wrap.
This little rest makes the crust softer and gives you a better stretch.
Step 5. Bake and enjoy.
If making pizza, preheat your oven to 425°F and bake for 12 to 15 minutes depending on thickness and topping load.
For breadsticks or crazy bread, 400°F for 12 to 15 minutes works perfectly.
Brush with garlic butter, sprinkle with cheese, or top with whatever your family loves.
The honey gives the crust a beautiful colour and a hint of sweetness that pairs so well with savoury toppings.
Make Ahead and Storage Tips for Honey and Bread Flour Pizza Dough
This dough stores beautifully and is perfect for planning ahead. The honey keeps the dough soft, and the bread flour gives it great structure even after chilling or freezing.
To refrigerate:
Let the dough complete the first rise at room temperature. Punch it down gently, shape into a ball, oil lightly, and store in an airtight container or a lightly oiled zip style bag. Chill for 1 to 3 days.
To freeze:
Follow the same steps as above, then place the dough ball in an oiled freezer safe bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. Bread flour holds up very well in the freezer and gives a great rise after thawing.
To use:
Thaw frozen dough overnight in the fridge. Bring chilled dough to room temperature for about 30 to 45 minutes so it relaxes and stretches easily.
The honey helps the crust brown beautifully after a cold rest, so it is a great dough to prep ahead of time for busy nights!
