How to Make Simple Baked Ziti Casserole Without Spending a Fortune!
Hi! If you’ve been following me for long you’ll already know this, but for those who are new, welcome to Far From The Farm. I’m Mona, the Brit behind the recipes, learning life and food in the States while sharing our debt-free journey and what’s on the menu in our home today!
Although we do have pasta bakes back home in the UK, baked ziti was something I had never come across until I met my husband and moved to the US.
It quickly became one of those dishes that feels very American in the best possible way. Cozy, filling, and built to feed a family without much fuss.
These days our family loves baked ziti in all its forms. The fully loaded versions with multiple cheeses and layers. Vegetarian versions packed with spinach and vegetables. And then there are the very basic ones.
This recipe is firmly in that last category!
It’s the kind of baked ziti we relied on when we were first married and stretching every penny so I could visit him overseas. Meat, pasta, sauce, and just enough cheese to make it feel comforting without tipping the grocery bill over the edge.
This one will not win awards. But it will get you through the week before payday. The leftovers reheat beautifully, and everyone actually wants to eat them.

You can absolutely dress it up if your budget allows. Fresh onion and garlic work well. Finely diced carrots stretch the meat further. Extra cheese is always welcome if it fits your season. But this version is our cheap and cheerful standby that the whole family enjoys.
I also make this baked ziti as a freezer meal often. Having something ready to go on the days when life gets busy has been a huge help, especially during heavier seasons.
And of course, cooking simple meals like this at home helps us stay on track as a military family on baby step 2 of our debt free journey, trying to make every penny count.
And just a reminder that if you’re struggling and you need help with managing your budget or starting your own debt free journey then here’s some FREE resources below you may find helpful!

Ingredients
Serves 4 to 6
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb ziti pasta (16 oz)
- 48 to 50 oz pasta sauce (2 large jars or cans)
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp onion powder
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until fully cooked. Drain off excess grease and set aside.

Step 2
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the ziti pasta for about 4 minutes less than the package instructions. The pasta should be quite al dente since it finishes cooking in the oven. Drain well.
Step 3
Add the drained pasta and cooked ground beef to a large pot or mixing bowl.

Step 4
Pour in the pasta sauce and stir to combine.

Step 5
Add the red pepper flakes, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir thoroughly so everything is evenly seasoned.
Step 6
Spread half of the pasta mixture into the bottom of a greased 9 x 13 baking dish, pressing gently into an even layer.

Step 7
Sprinkle over half of the parmesan cheese and half of the mozzarella cheese.
Step 8
Add the remaining pasta mixture, then top with the rest of the parmesan and mozzarella.

Step 9
Bake in a preheated 375°F oven for 35 to 40 minutes until hot, bubbly, and lightly browned on top. Serve warm.
