Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp dark chili powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp dried oregano
  • pinch cayenne pepper - (about 1/8 tsp or thereabouts)
  • 1 tsp cornstarch

Equipment

  • Small mixing bowl
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. Add all of the spices and cornstarch to a small bowl.
  2. Mix well until fully combined and there are no visible clumps, especially from the cornstarch.
  3. To use, brown 1 lb of ground beef as usual. Sprinkle the seasoning over the cooked meat.
  4. Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup water, stir well, and simmer for about 5 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the meat evenly.

Notes

  • This seasoning is designed to match the strength and thickness of a standard 1 oz packet.
  • The cornstarch helps create that familiar saucy texture when simmered with water.
  • You can adjust the heat by increasing or decreasing the cayenne pepper.

Storage

  • This seasoning is best used immediately.
  • If needed, it can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. Stir before using, as spices can settle.
