And as always I just have to mention that using a bread machine has genuinely changed the way I cook at home and I think it could help you out too. It does so much for me. Dough for sweet rolls, soft dinner rolls, pizza nights, everyday sandwich loaves, quick cakes, even small batches of jam.
It takes on all the fiddly steps and frees me up to carry on with everything else at home. It keeps things consistent and budget friendly. It has made homemade baking feel achievable even on my busiest days, (I’ll share the one I use in the next section, so skip to that if you’re interested).
As always, these photos are from my real kitchen here in our sweet military base home. No staged lighting or spotless marble counters. Just real life and real food made in a small space. Proof that you can feed your family well without needing a dream kitchen or fancy tools!
So let’s roll up our sleeves and hop into the kitchen to make these iconic Texas Roadhouse bread rolls with some help from our bread machine!
Why You’ll Love Using a Bread Machine In Your Kitchen!
If you’re new here, you’ll quickly learn that I am such a fan of using a bread machine for dough. It has been one of the biggest helps in my kitchen, especially during busy or overwhelming seasons.
My parents gifted me this little Compact Cuisinart Bread Machine recently when I moved from the UK to the States after getting married, and it has worked like a little powerhouse ever since!

It kneads beautifully. It rises dough evenly. It keeps everything contained in one pan so I am not dealing with flour across every surface of the kitchen.
And on days where the house feels chaotic or I am juggling too much, I can add the ingredients, press the dough button, and let it get on with the work while I focus on everything else.
It takes away so much of the guesswork and makes homemade bread, pizza dough, cinnamon rolls, soft rolls, and sweet bakes feel much simpler.
It has also been a real blessing for our budget. Homemade dough costs pennies compared to store prepared versions and certainly compared to eating out. As a military family on baby step 2 of our debt free journey, little savings like that matter across an entire month.
If you have ever felt intimidated by bread making, this is your gentle nudge to give it a try. A dough cycle handles all the kneading for you.
You get soft, reliable, fluffy dough without standing over a counter for ages or worrying if things rose the way they should. It makes homemade cooking feel doable, even on days that are far from calm.
There are so many beginner friendly ideas to help you feel confident and excited about homemade dough!

- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (one packet)
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 tbsp cold salted butter, cubed
- 1 tsp salt

Step By Step Instructions
How to Make the Rolls
Step 1. Activate the yeast:

Remove the bread machine pan. Add the warm milk, honey, and yeast. Stir gently.
Cover the top loosely with plastic wrap and let it sit 5 to 10 minutes until foamy. No foam means your yeast is inactive and you need to start again.

Step 2. Add the remaining ingredients:
Add the egg and butter to the yeast mixture. You do not need to stir anything.
Then add the bread flour on top.
Make a small well or dent in the middle of the flour and place the salt inside the well. Lightly cover the salt with flour so it does not touch the yeast too early.
Place the pan back into the bread machine.

Step 3. Run the dough cycle:
Select Dough cycle. Let the machine knead and rise the dough fully.
Most machines take around 1 hour 30 minutes. When the cycle finishes, remove the dough.
Step 4. Roll and shape the classic Texas Roadhouse squares:
Sometimes it’s easier to watch video instructions for this stage, so check out my video of this recipe that includes a step-by-step guide to rolling out the dough and shaping the rolls!
Dust your counter lightly with flour.
Roll the dough into a large rectangle about 1/2 inch thick.
Fold the rectangle in half like a book.
Use a pizza cutter to cut the dough into 18 squares. Three rows by six rows works well.
Place the squares on a lined baking sheet, leaving slight space between each one.
Let the rolls rest for 10 to 15 minutes, covered.
Step 5. Bake:
After they’ve rested, bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 10 to 15 minutes until lightly golden on top.
When the rolls are done brush them whilst still warm with a little of the cinnamon butter melted for that classic shine and sweet barely-there hint of a buttery glaze! Recipe for that below!

How To Make Cinnamon Honey Butter
- Beat the softened butter with a hand mixer.
- Add powdered sugar slowly.
- Mix in cinnamon and honey until fluffy.
- Store in the fridge and soften before serving.

How To Freeze The Dough For Later?
If you want to get ahead for busy weeks or holiday cooking, this dough freezes very well. The key is freezing it at the right stage so it still rises, bakes, and tastes just as soft and fluffy as a fresh batch.
The best time to freeze this dough is right after the bread machine dough cycle finishes.
As soon as the machine beeps, tip the dough out, let it rest for about ten to fifteen minutes, then shape it gently into one smooth ball.
Lightly coat the outside with a little olive oil, wrap it in plastic wrap, and place it into a freezer safe bag.
Press out as much air as possible and label the bag so you remember what it is. Frozen dough will keep well for up to two months.
When you are ready to use it, thaw the dough overnight in the fridge for a slow, even rise. If you are short on time, you can thaw it on the counter for two to three hours instead.
Once thawed, let it sit at room temperature for twenty to forty minutes so it softens and becomes easy to handle.
At that point, roll it out into a rectangle, fold it, rest it briefly, and cut into the classic Texas Roadhouse style squares. If the dough still feels cold after shaping, give the rolls a short rise at room temperature so they puff slightly before baking.
Bake at the usual temperature and brush with melted butter when they come out of the oven. The flavour and texture stay very close to fresh, and freezing a batch or two ahead makes holiday prep much easier!
Notes and Troubleshooting
Notes
- Warm milk and honey help the rolls turn extra soft.
- Folding the dough gives a layered, pillowy texture.
- These freeze very well once baked.
Troubleshooting
Dough too sticky? Add a small sprinkle of flour while rolling.
Rolls too dense? Your yeast may have been inactive.
Rolls are coming out too browned? Lower the rack or reduce bake time slightly.
Storage
Store baked rolls in an airtight tub for up to three days. Reheat in the oven for a few minutes to bring back that fresh, soft bakery texture.
You can also freeze the raw dough right after the bread machine dough cycle finishes. Shape it into a ball, wrap it tightly, and freeze for up to two months.
Thaw overnight in the fridge or on the counter for a few hours, then shape, rest, and bake as usual.
Baked rolls can also be frozen for up to two months. Let them cool completely, wrap well, and reheat in a warm oven until soft again.
