Perfect Not-Too-Sweet Cinnabon Copycat Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe!

A Smooth, Creamy, and Balanced Dream Frosting for Cinnamon Rolls, Cakes, and Sweet Bakes!

Hi! If you’ve been following me for long you’ll already know this, but for those who are new, welcome to Far From The Farm. I’m Mona, the Brit behind the recipes, learning life and food in the States while sharing our debt-free journey and what’s on the menu in our home today!

Now that we’ve nailed the perfect homemade cinnamon roll dough and baked those big, fluffy Cinnabon-style rolls, it’s time for the frosting that brings it all together. I’ve tried every version out there. But they were either too sweet, too thick, or too buttery.

This one is the perfect balance. Creamy, smooth, and rich without being overly sugary. It spreads like a dream and melts beautifully over warm rolls.

Most homemade frostings can be a bit heavy on powdered sugar. Our family prefers the more softer, creamier frosting, and I wanted something that felt more like the real Cinnabon frosting. Indulgent but still light enough that you want to go back for another bite!

This version is simple, made with just a handful of staple ingredients, and it works for everything from cinnamon rolls to cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. The combination of butter, cream cheese, vanilla, and a little sugar is magic.

This is the best cream cheese frosting for your breakfast pastries and cinnamon rolls!

The texture is silky, the flavor is balanced, and it’s become my go-to frosting for nearly every sweet breakfast bake that comes out of my kitchen.

I use it on our Bread Machine Cinnabon Copycat Cinnamon Rolls and our Basic Bread Machine Cinnamon Roll Dough, but it’s also perfect for carrot cake, banana muffins, or a drizzle over warm banana bread. It’s the kind of frosting that makes a simple bake feel like something special.

As always, these photos are from my real kitchen here in our sweet military base home. No staged lighting or spotless marble counters. Just real life and real food made in a small space. Proof that you can feed your family well without needing a dream kitchen or fancy tools!

So grab your mixer, a stick of butter, and that block of cream cheese from the fridge – we’re making the dreamiest cream cheese frosting you’ll ever taste!

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Hand mixer or stand mixer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Silicone spatula

Ingredients

Large batch – Makes Enough for 28 Large Cinnamon Rolls or 2 Cakes

  • 1 cup salted butter (2 sticks), softened to room temperature
  • 8 oz cream cheese (1 block), softened also to room temperature
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (icing sugar if you’re in the UK)
  • 2 to 4 tsp vanilla extract (measure with your heart!)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Soften your ingredients

Leave your butter and cream cheese at room temperature for about 30 minutes before you begin. This helps them mix smoothly without lumps.

Step 2: Beat the butter and cream cheese

In a mixing bowl, beat together the butter and cream cheese until creamy and smooth. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula as needed.

Step 3: Add the sugar and vanilla

Gradually add in the powdered sugar and vanilla, and mix on low speed until combined. Usually just 2 to 3 minutes is enough.

You might need to scrape the sides of the bowl down again to ensure all the cream cheese is incorporated.

Step 4: Increase speed

Then increase to medium speed and mix until fluffy and glossy for a few seconds. Taste and adjust sweetness to your liking. It should be rich, smooth, and just a touch sweet.

Step 5: Frost and enjoy

Spread the frosting generously over warm cinnamon rolls or use it to top cakes, cupcakes, or cookies. It softens and melts slightly on warm bakes, creating that signature Cinnabon glaze effect.

Notes and Troubleshooting

Notes:

  • If you prefer a thinner frosting that melts into your rolls, add a teaspoon of milk or cream.
  • For a thicker spread (great for cupcakes or cakes), add an extra ¼ cup of powdered sugar.
  • Store frosting in the fridge for up to 3 days, and bring to room temperature before using.

Troubleshooting:

  • Too sweet? Add a pinch of salt or another ounce of cream cheese.
  • Too thick? Mix in a splash of milk or cream.
  • Too thin? Add a bit more powdered sugar and beat again.
