Learn how to Make a Tangy, Smoky Carolina-Style BBQ Sauce with a Little Heat that is Perfect for Pulled Meats, Sandwiches and Marinades!
Hi! If you’ve been following me for long you’ll already know this, but for those who are new, welcome to Far From The Farm. I’m Mona, the Brit behind the recipes, learning life and food in the States while sharing our debt-free journey and what’s on the menu in our home today!
This honey mustard BBQ sauce is inspired by a delicious Carolina BBQ Sauce version my good friend Samantha from Dreams of Grace and Grit used to make regularly when our families were stationed together.
It showed up at cookouts, casual dinners, and just about every gathering where something was being grilled or slow cooked. Pulled chicken, pork sandwiches, sausages, even simple weeknight meals. It always worked and we looked forward to those casual family feasts so much!
If you’ve lived military life for any length of time, you know how this goes. One day you’re cooking together and sharing recipes. The next, everyone is scattered across the country. Same friendships. Different kitchens…
So when the craving hit recently, I decided to recreate a version that worked with what we actually had in our pantry.

We didn’t have apple cider vinegar on hand, so I reached for red wine vinegar instead. It brings a sharper, brighter tang than most BBQ sauces, and it works beautifully with mustard.
We prefer a darker chili powder for its deeper, earthier flavour, paired with chipotle hot sauce for smoky heat. It keeps the sauce bold enough for those who like a little kick, while still being balanced and family friendly.
This is not a thick, ketchup-heavy BBQ sauce. It is runnier, more pourable, and very much in that Carolina mustard BBQ style. It works beautifully as both a sauce and a marinade, just be mindful when pouring because it comes out faster than store bought versions!
The flavor is tangy, lightly sweet, smoky, and gently spicy. Balanced without being overpowering.
It comes together in minutes and makes about 320ml, which I love storing in a simple squeeze bottle in the fridge. Nothing fancy. Just practical and easy to grab when dinner needs help.
Not to mention that learning how to make your own sauces at home is incredibly budget-friendly, and for us as a military family on baby step 2 of our debt free journey every single dollar we save really does count towards our goal.

Available on Amazon.com [ad]
Ingredients
Makes about 320ml
- 3/4 cup yellow mustard
- 1/4 cup runny honey
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup red wine vinegar
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon dark chili powder
- 1 to 2 tablespoons chipotle hot sauce, adjust to taste
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Combine the ingredients
Add all ingredients to a mixing bowl. Using a whisk, stir until fully combined and smooth.
The vinegar smell will be strong at first. That softens as the sauce rests.

Step 2: Taste and adjust
Taste the sauce and adjust heat if needed. One tablespoon of chipotle hot sauce gives gentle warmth, staying balanced for most guests. Two tablespoons brings more heat and a little kick that little ones may not love.

Step 3: Store
Pour into a squeeze bottle or airtight container, use a funnel if you can as it’s a thinner type of BBQ sauce. Refrigerate before using for best flavor.
