Small Batch Holiday Pretzel Treats Packed With Sweet Caramel and Crunchy Praline Pecans!

Holiday baking here in the States has a vibe all of its own and I adore it. There is something magical about all the tiny, last minute treats that seem to pop up everywhere this time of year.

Since my recent move here from the UK, I am still learning about the flavours and traditions everyone else grew up with. One that really caught my eye this season is the whole world of Pretzel Treats.

They are tiny little bites of joy that somehow taste like you spent hours on them even though they take only minutes!

Hi! If you’ve been following me for long you’ll already know this, but for those who are new, welcome to Far From The Farm. I’m Mona, the Brit behind the recipes, learning life and food in the States while sharing our debt-free journey and what’s on the menu in our home today!

There is a traditional pretzel treat that my husband absolutely loves. The classic turtle pretzel bite. He also has a soft spot for those candied praline pecans that appear everywhere during the holidays.

Deluxe Praline Pecan Turtle Pretzel Bites Recipe!
Just 3 simple ingredients is all it takes to make these lovely chocolate caramel pecan pretzel treats!

Makes a small batch of 8 bitesized pretzel treats

  • 8 mini pretzel twists
  • 8 unwrapped Rolos
  • 8 candied praline pecan halves (we love the Kirkland brand variety)

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1. Preheat the oven and prep the tray

Preheat your oven to 350°F.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange the pretzels in a single layer with a little space between them so the chocolate and nuts have room to settle.

Step 2. Add the Rolos

Place one unwrapped Rolo in the centre of each pretzel.

Make sure they are standing upright and not leaning over the edge so they melt evenly.

place an unwrapped Rolo candy on top of each pretzel mini twist and bake for 1 – 2 minutes in a 350°F oven until the Rolos have started to soften.

Step 3. Warm in the oven

Place the tray in the oven for 1 to 2 minutes only.

You want the Rolos just softened enough to press a pecan into, not melted into flat puddles. Keep an eye on them because they soften quickly.

Step 4. Press on the praline pecans

Remove the tray from the oven and work fairly quickly.

Gently press one praline pecan half onto the top of each softened Rolo. The caramel and chocolate will squish slightly and hug the pretzel which is exactly what you want.

Carefully place a single candied praline pecan half on top of each melted Rolo and slightly press down.

Step 5. Cool and set

Allow the bites to cool on the tray until they firm up enough to lift without sliding around.

You can pop the tray into the fridge for 10 to 15 minutes if you want them to set faster or prefer a slightly firmer texture.

Once fully set, enjoy straight away or transfer to an airtight container ready for gifting, snacking or adding to your holiday treat plates!

Notes and Troubleshooting

Notes

  • Do not over bake. Rolos melt incredibly fast and become runny.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
  • These freeze well for up to a month although the pecans soften slightly once thawed.
  • Microwave one for five seconds if you want a warm gooey centre.

Troubleshooting

The chocolate turned into puddles

They were in the oven a bit too long. Next time, reduce the time to closer to 1 minute and check often. They should look glossy and softened, not collapsed.

The pecan slides off when I press it on

The Rolos might be a little too melted or the tray may be tilted. Press gently and straight down, and let them cool flat on the tray so everything settles and firms up.

The bites are too hard

They may have been chilled for a long time. Leave them at room temperature for a few minutes and the caramel should soften again.

Small Batch Tips

This recipe makes eight treats. If you want more, simply match the count of pretzels to Rolos to pecans.

Keeping that 1 to 1 to 1 ratio means you do not end up with leftover ingredients, which helps keep this little treat both simple and budget friendly.

Storage

  • Store the cooled bites in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
  • For slightly firmer bites, keep them in the fridge for up to a week and bring to room temperature before serving if you prefer a softer centre.
  • These freeze well for up to 1 month. The praline pecans soften a little once thawed, but the flavour is still lovely.

Serving Ideas

These Deluxe Praline Pecan Turtle Pretzel Bites are perfect for:

  • Holiday movie nights
  • Last minute hostess gifts
  • Christmas cookie boxes and treat tins
  • After school treats
  • Holiday favours
  • A sweet nibble on a budget friendly charcuterie or snack board
  • Little extras on a dessert platter next to cookies and brownies

Why This Recipe Works?

  • Salty pretzels, warm caramel, milk chocolate and buttery praline pecans all in one bite.
  • Oven time is less than two minutes so you can make them in the smallest pocket of free time.
  • They cool and set quickly, which makes them ideal for last minute plans.
  • Small batch on purpose, so you can enjoy something sweet without a huge tray of treats sitting on the counter.
  • Easy to scale up for gifting, school trays or holiday parties.

FAQ

Can I use regular pecans instead of praline pecans?

Yes. Plain toasted pecans work too, they will just be less sweet and not have that candied crunch. If you use plain pecans, you may want to sprinkle a tiny pinch of brown sugar or flaky salt over the top while the chocolate is still soft.

Can I make these ahead of time?

You can. They keep well at room temperature for a few days, or in the fridge for up to a week. They are great to make the night before a party so you are not scrambling on the day.

Can I use a different chocolate candy?

Any similar caramel chocolate, like caramel filled chocolates or your favourite brand of caramel bites, should work. Just keep the size close to a Rolo so it melts at the same rate.

How do I double or triple the recipe?

Simply keep the ratio the same. Match the number of pretzels to the number of Rolos to the number of pecan halves. The oven time stays the same, you will just need more space on the tray.
