How to Make this Sweet and Crunchy British-Style Chocolate Peanut Chex Clusters!
If you’ve been following me for long you’ll already know this but for those who are new, welcome to Far From The Farm. I’m Mona, the Brit behind the recipes, learning life and food in the States while sharing our debt-free journey and what’s for dinner (or snack time!) in our home today.
So if you saw my last post, you’ll know we’ve started a little Chex Mix Snack Series in our house. My husband recently introduced me to the American world of homemade Chex Mix snacks, and I’ve got to admit, I’m completely hooked.
It seems like every family across the States has their own twist on it. Some go for salty and savory, others load it up with chocolate and candies, and people even theme them for holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas.
Since we didn’t have a family recipe to work from, we started with inspiration from Samantha over at Dreams of Grace and Grit Blog and used her Southern Christmas Sweet and Salty Trail Mix Recipe as a base.
We’re still working our way through Baby Step 2 of our debt-free journey, so we wanted to make something fun using only what we already had in the pantry.

We didn’t have everything we needed from her recipe, so we improvised a little and made our own variations of Chex Mix snacks instead of a trail mix. My husband thought it would be fun to make three versions in one night, and I wasn’t mad about it! This recipe is the second one we created – a chocolate and peanut Chex party mix turned into chunky Chocolate Clusters!
For my fellow Brits, this one will remind you of home. You know those chocolate rock clusters from the corner shop? The Crunchie-style ones covered in chocolate with that perfect crunch? They were my absolute favorite back in the UK. You can sometimes find them online, but they’re definitely not as easy to grab here, so this might just be my new favorite homemade swap.
It’s quick, budget-friendly, and full of texture. The pretzels bring saltiness, the M&M’s add color and crunch, and the melted chocolate pulls it all together in the best way possible. These are perfect for movie nights, gift bags, or just keeping in a jar for when you need a little sweet pick-me-up.
We hope you love making this snack as much as we did. They’re part of this same fun series we’ve been creating right here from our tiny kitchen on base.
As always, these photos are from my real kitchen here in our sweet military base home. No staged lighting or spotless marble counters. Just real life and real food made in a small space. Proof that you can feed your family well without needing a dream kitchen or fancy tools!

Equipment
- Spatula
- Mixing bowls
- Parchment paper
- Baking sheet
- Large glass jar, airtight container or snack bags.
Available on Amazon.com [ad]
Ingredients (Makes 1 Batch)
- 1 ¼ cups pretzel twists
- 1 ¼ cups Honey Nut Chex cereal
- 1 cup Honey Nut Cheerios
- ½ cup honey roasted peanuts
- 4.5 oz M&M’s of your choice (we mixed two types)
- 1 cup chocolate chips (we used semi-sweet)
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine the pretzel twists, Chex cereal, Cheerios, peanuts, and M&M’s. Mix gently until everything looks evenly combined.

Step 2: In a microwave-safe bowl, add the chocolate chips and vegetable oil. Microwave for 60 seconds, stir, then continue in 30-second bursts until smooth and melted.
Step 3: Pour the melted chocolate over the cereal mixture and toss carefully with a spatula until everything is completely coated.

Step 4: Spread the mixture out onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Make sure that there’s some overlap between the different elements so that they dry in little clusters rather than separately. Leave it to dry for about an hour.
Step 5: Once it’s firm, lift the parchment paper from the sides. It should naturally break apart into nice little clusters.

Step 6: Store the clusters in a large glass jar or portion them into small cellophane snack bags. They’re perfect for parties, lunchboxes, or a cozy movie night at home.
Serve and enjoy!
Notes and Troubleshooting
Notes:
You can swap out candies for any seasonal colors or shapes. Red and green for Christmas, orange and black for Halloween, pastel tones for Easter, or even fun pinks and golds for Valentine’s Day.
Troubleshooting:
- If the chocolate isn’t melting smoothly, stir in a teaspoon of oil to fix the texture.
- If your clusters aren’t setting, place the tray in the fridge for about 15 minutes.
Storage
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. If your kitchen runs warm, pop them in the fridge to keep the chocolate firm.
Serving Ideas
Serve in a big bowl for parties or divide into clear snack bags tied with ribbon for a cute homemade gift idea.
They also make great additions to dessert boards or as a topping for ice cream sundaes.

FAQ
Can I use white chocolate instead of regular chocolate?
Yes, white chocolate works beautifully. Just keep an eye on it while melting so it doesn’t overheat.
Can I make this nut-free?
Of course. Just skip the peanuts and add extra cereal or pretzels for balance.
How can I make them more festive?
Swap out the M&M’s for themed colors or drizzle colored chocolate on top once they’ve set.
Can I double this recipe?
Definitely. Just melt the chocolate in batches so it doesn’t start to harden before you’re done mixing.

The Takeaway
These Classic Chocolate Peanut Chex Mix Clusters are the kind of snack that never lasts long. They’re nostalgic, chocolatey, and satisfy every craving for something crunchy and sweet.
