A Soft and Slightly Sweet White Bread Machine Loaf Made with Canned Condensed Milk!

Hi! If you’ve been following me for long you’ll already know this, but for those who are new, welcome to Far From The Farm. I’m Mona, the Brit behind the recipes, learning life and food in the States while sharing our debt-free journey and what’s on the menu in our home today!

This recipe is another cozy addition to my growing bread machine series, and it might just be one of my softest loaves yet. I use the compact Cuisinart Bread Maker [ad], and honestly, it’s one of my favorite kitchen gadgets.

Since moving from the UK to the States, I’ve had to adapt a lot, not just to the food but to the ingredients and even how bread feels and tastes here. The store-bought loaves are fine for convenience, but after a while, I realized they weren’t agreeing with me.

And this bread machine gifted to us by my parents, quickly became the best solution for both health and budget!

Being able to make fresh bread with just a few simple pantry ingredients means I can control what goes into it, and we save money on every bake.

Plus, there’s nothing quite like that smell of warm bread wafting through the house, especially when you’re working from home or cooking dinner for family on base.

This particular loaf came about entirely by accident. One week when my in-laws were staying with us, I realized I was completely out of milk, but I still wanted to have a nice soft loaf for sandwiches at dinner.

I raided the pantry and found one of those little mini-cans of sweetened condensed milk that I’d picked up on sale. I figured, why not give it a try? The result was better than I ever expected, softer than my usual white loaf, with a gentle sweetness from the honey that paired beautifully with the creamy texture the condensed milk adds!

And you can catch a glimpse of my Father-in-Law helping me make this recipe in the pictures!

The condensed milk makes this delicious and soft!

It’s simple, economical, and a lovely way to make something a bit different out of the same basic bread machine setup. I’ve made this one multiple times now, and every loaf has come out consistently soft and delicious.

If you’re looking for a loaf that feels like a bakery treat but is made mostly from pantry staples and a small bit of fresh butter, this is the one.

As always, these photos are from my real kitchen here in our sweet military base home. No staged lighting or spotless marble counters. Just real life and real food made in a small space. Proof that you can feed your family well without needing a dream kitchen or fancy tools!

Why You’ll Love Using a Bread Machine In Your Kitchen!

If you’re new here, you’ll quickly learn that I am such a fan of using a bread machine for dough. It has been one of the biggest helps in my kitchen, especially during busy or overwhelming seasons.

My parents gifted me this little Compact Cuisinart Bread Machine recently when I moved from the UK to the States after getting married, and it has worked like a little powerhouse ever since!

It kneads beautifully. It rises dough evenly. It keeps everything contained in one pan so I am not dealing with flour across every surface of the kitchen.

And on days where the house feels chaotic or I am juggling too much, I can add the ingredients, press the dough button, and let it get on with the work while I focus on everything else.

It takes away so much of the guesswork and makes homemade bread, pizza dough, cinnamon rolls, soft rolls, and sweet bakes feel much simpler.

It has also been a real blessing for our budget. Homemade dough costs pennies compared to store prepared versions and certainly compared to eating out. As a military family on baby step 2 of our debt free journey, little savings like that matter across an entire month.

If you have ever felt intimidated by bread making, this is your gentle nudge to give it a try. A dough cycle handles all the kneading for you.

You get soft, reliable, fluffy dough without standing over a counter for ages or worrying if things rose the way they should. It makes homemade cooking feel doable, even on days that are far from calm.

Equipment

  • Bread machine (I’ll link mine below)
  • Knife, for butter
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Measuring jug
  • Spoon
  • Plastic wrap

Available on Amazon.com [ad]

Ingredients (makes a 2 lb loaf)

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 (3.5 oz) mini-can sweetened condensed milk (see link below!)
  • 2 teaspoons bread machine yeast
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1⁄3 cup honey
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (can substitute bread flour for a chewier texture)
  • 1½ teaspoons salt

Tip: warm water is key. It should feel warm to touch but not hot, or it may harm your yeast.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the bread pan

Remove the insert from your bread machine so you can easily add ingredients without spilling any into the machine itself.

Add your water and condensed milk into your bread machine pan insert.

Step 2: Add liquids and yeast

Pour the warm water into the insert, then add the condensed milk and yeast. Give it a quick stir and cover with plastic wrap for 5 minutes to proof.

Then add the yeast and stir, waiting a few minutes to check it has activated.

Step 3: Check for yeast activation

After about 5 minutes, peek under the wrap. The mixture should look cloudy and slightly bubbly. That means your yeast is alive and ready. If nothing has changed, discard it and start again with new yeast.

Step 4: Add butter and honey

Drop in the butter and drizzle in your honey. No need to stir as the machine will handle that part!

Now add your butter and honey.

Step 5: Add flour

Carefully scoop your 4 cups of flour right on top of the liquid. Spread it evenly across the surface so it forms a layer over the wet ingredients.

And lastly the flour and salt!

Step 6: Add salt

Make a small well with your finger in the top of the flour. Add your salt into that well and cover lightly with a little of the flour. This step helps prevent the salt from meeting the yeast too early, which can slow or stop the rise.

Step 7: Start the bread machine

Insert the pan back into the machine. Choose the White Bread setting, select the 2 lb loaf size, and press start. My compact Cuisinart runs for about 3½ hours. I like the darkest crust option for this loaf, as it gives that lovely golden-brown bakery finish.

And just a few hours later you’ll have this delicious and soft honey-sweetened white bread that is perfect for sandwiches!

Step 8: Cool and slice

Once the loaf is done, carefully lift the insert from the machine using oven gloves. Turn the bread out onto a cooling rack. Let it cool completely before slicing for the neatest crumb.

Enjoy warm slices with butter or honey, or save it for sandwiches later in the day.

Notes & Troubleshooting

Notes:

  • Condensed milk creates a soft and rich texture without needing extra dairy.
  • Honey helps the crust brown and adds natural sweetness.
  • Butter deepens flavor and makes the loaf extra tender.
  • Bread flour gives more chew, while all-purpose flour stays soft.
  • This recipe works beautifully with the Cuisinart Compact Bread Maker or any standard 2 lb machine.

Troubleshooting:

Dense loaf? Your yeast may have been inactive, or the water temperature was off. Make sure your yeast is foamy before adding other ingredients.

Collapsed top? Too much liquid or overly warm proofing. Reduce water slightly next time.

Pale crust? Increase the crust color setting or leave in the warm machine for a few extra minutes at the end.

Hard crust? Brush with butter right after baking to soften.

Storage

Cool the loaf completely before storing. Keep it in an airtight container or bread box for up to 2 days at room temperature.

For longer storage, slice and freeze in freezer-safe bags with parchment between layers. Toast or thaw as needed.

Serving Ideas

  • Toasted with butter and jam for breakfast
  • Thick slices for grilled cheese or paninis
  • Bread pudding or French toast
  • Soft sandwiches for lunchboxes
  • Warm with soup or chili on a cold day

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Light, soft, and slightly sweet
  • Budget friendly and family approved
  • Smells amazing while baking
  • Works every time with minimal cleanup

FAQ

Can I use evaporated milk instead of condensed milk?

No. Condensed milk is sweetened and thicker, giving the bread its soft crumb and gentle flavor. Evaporated milk won’t achieve the same texture.

Can I use sugar instead of honey?

Yes. Use 1⁄4 cup of sugar if you prefer. The flavor will be milder, but the texture will still be wonderful.

Can I bake this in the oven?

Yes! Use your bread machine’s dough cycle, then shape into a loaf pan and bake at 350°F for 30 to 35 minutes.

Can I make this dairy free?

Unfortunately, condensed milk contains dairy. For a dairy-free alternative, try my Easy Bread Machine Dairy Free White Bread Recipe!
