Set and Forget Pasta Recipe for Cooking Mini Farfalle Bow Tie Pasta In Your Instant Pot With No More Stovetop Mess!
Hi! If youโve been following me for long youโll already know this, but for those who are new, welcome to Far From The Farm. Iโm Mona, the Brit behind the recipes, learning life and food in the States while sharing our debt-free journey and whatโs on the menu in our home today!
And today we are adding another simple one to this little Instant Pot pasta series because apparently I have reached the point in life where not cleaning pasta water off the stovetop feels like an actual luxury.
Mini farfalle bow tie pasta is one of those pasta shapes that seems to work with absolutely everything.
Cold pasta salads. Creamy chicken pasta. Soups. Lunch prep bowls. Buttered noodles. Quick weeknight dinners. It somehow manages to fit into almost any meal.
The smaller bow tie shape is also surprisingly good at holding onto sauces and dressings thanks to all those little folds and ridges.
And if you have children in the house, mini farfalle tends to be one of those pasta shapes that gets far fewer complaints than some of the others.
As a military family deep into baby step 2 of our debt free journey, pasta continues to be one of the easiest ways to stretch meals further without stretching the grocery budget right along with them.

A simple box of pasta can become dinner, lunch prep, pasta salad, a side dish, or the base of another completely different meal later in the week.
Cooking pasta in the Instant Pot has become one of my favorite little kitchen shortcuts because it means no giant boiling pot, no starchy splashes all over the stove, no waiting forever for water to boil, and far less cleanup afterwards.
Just one more simple way to make busy weeknights feel a little easier.
Iโve experimented with some of the no-drain Instant Pot pasta methods, but I keep coming back to this version.
I find the pasta can end up with hard bits in some places and softer bits in others, which isnโt really what Iโm looking for.
Using enough water to properly cook the pasta gives a much more even texture, and draining off any extra afterwards only takes a few seconds. It also frees me up to get on with the rest of dinner instead of standing around waiting for water to boil or keeping one eye on a pot of pasta.
And unlike stovetop pasta, I donโt end up scrubbing dried starchy water splashes off the stovetop afterwards. For me, itโs the best balance between convenience and consistently good pasta.
Also just a quick note about salt before we start. We personally do not salt the cooking water because some members of our family are navigating health issues and itโs easier for us to season individual portions afterwards instead.
But if you normally salt your pasta water, you absolutely still can.

Mini Farfalle vs Regular Farfalle
What’s the difference between mini farfalle pasta and regular farfalle (bow tie) pasta?
If youโve been wondering whether mini farfalle and regular farfalle are the same thing, the answer is yesโฆ mostly.
Both are also known as bow tie pasta, in fact back in the UK I’d only ever heard them referred to as bow tie pasta.
โFarfalleโ is simply the Italian name for bow tie pasta, while mini farfalle is a smaller version of the same shape.
The little pinched center and ruffled edges are exactly the same. The only real difference is the size.
Because mini farfalle is smaller, it tends to work especially well in:
- Pasta salads
- Soups
- Lunch prep bowls
- Side dishes
- Lighter pasta meals
Regular farfalle on the other hand is often used for:
- Creamy pasta dishes
- Alfredo sauces
- Hearty pasta dinners
- Baked pasta recipes
- Larger main course meals
The smaller size of mini farfalle also means it cooks a little faster than regular farfalle, which is why cooking times can vary between the two.
If youโre standing in the grocery store wondering which one to buy, neither is wrong. It really just depends what youโre making.
Iโve put together this handy comparison guide below that you can save to Pinterest for later or share with another pasta-loving friend!

Step-By-Step Instructions
Step one: Add the pasta to the Instant Pot

Pour the dry mini farfalle pasta into the insert of your Instant Pot.
Try to spread the pasta fairly evenly across the bottom of the pot instead of leaving it piled in one mound.
Step two: Add the water
Pour 4 1/2 cups of water over the pasta.
Check that the pasta is fully covered before closing the lid.
If any pieces are sitting above the water line, add a little more water until everything is covered.
Step three: Gently press the pasta down
Using a silicone spatula or spoon, gently press the pasta down into the water.
You do not need to stir heavily. Just make sure most of the pasta is submerged.
Step four: Seal the lid

Place the insert into the Instant Pot if it is not already inside.
Secure the lid and make sure the valve is turned to SEAL.
The Instant Pot will take a few minutes to come to pressure before the cooking timer begins counting down.
Step five: Pressure cook
Cook on HIGH pressure for:
- 4 minutes for fully cooked mini farfalle
- 3 minutes for firmer pasta salad style pasta
I prefer the 4 minute timing for most hot pasta dishes because it gives tender, evenly cooked pasta.
Step six: Quick release immediately

As soon as the cooking time finishes, carefully perform a QUICK RELEASE.
Keep your hands and face away from the steam vent.
Pasta can continue softening if left sitting under pressure, so quick release helps keep the texture where you want it.
Step seven: Open and stir
Once the pressure pin drops, carefully open the lid.
Stir the pasta immediately using a silicone spatula.
This helps separate the bow ties while they are still hot and prevents sticking.
Step eight: Drain the pasta
Pour the cooked pasta into a colander and drain off the extra water.

A small amount of leftover water is completely normal. Different brands can absorb slightly different amounts.
Step nine: Serve
Serve immediately with butter, parmesan, Alfredo sauce, marinara, pesto, shredded cheese, or your favorite pasta sauce (I’m adding our spicy marinara sauce to mine tonight!)

Mini farfalle is also excellent in cold pasta salads.
Step ten: Adjust next time if needed
Pasta brands can vary slightly.
If your pasta is firmer than you like, add 1 extra minute next time.
If it comes out softer than you prefer, reduce the cook time slightly.
Once you know the timing your family likes, this becomes another simple pantry method you can use again and again.
