Set and Forget Pasta Recipe for Cooking Rotelli Spiral Pasta In Your Instant Pot With No More Stovetop Mess!
Hi! If you’ve been following me for long you’ll already know this, but for those who are new, welcome to Far From The Farm. I’m Mona, the Brit behind the recipes, learning life and food in the States while sharing our debt-free journey and what’s on the menu in our home today!
And today we are adding another simple one to this little Instant Pot pasta series because apparently I have reached the point in life where not cleaning pasta water off the stovetop feels like an actual luxury.
Rotelli pasta (or spiral pasta as we usually call it back home in the UK) is one of those brilliant pantry shapes that works with almost everything.
It has those lovely twists and ridges that hold onto sauce so well, which makes it great with spaghetti sauce, meat sauce, Alfredo, garlic butter, cheese sauce, or even just a little butter and parmesan when you need dinner to be quick and cheap.
It is also such a good pasta shape for pasta salads. The spirals grab onto dressings, little bits of cheese, chopped veggies, herbs, and all the good stuff that makes a cold pasta salad actually worth eating.
And the best part? It is cheap cheap cheap!
A 1 lb box of pasta can stretch a meal so much further, especially when you are feeding a family and trying not to blow the grocery budget before the week is even halfway over.
As a military family deep into baby step 2 of our debt free journey, meals like this matter. They are not fancy, but they help. Pasta bulks out dinners, keeps everyone full, and gives you a base for so many affordable meals using what you already have in the fridge, freezer, or pantry.
Cooking your pasta in the Instant Pot makes it even easier because you do not have to stand over a bubbling pot of water, dodge starchy splashes, or clean crusty little pasta marks off the stove afterwards.

Just pasta. Water. Lid on. Quick release. Drain. Done.
It is the kind of small kitchen shortcut that makes busy weeknights feel less chaotic. And once you start cooking basic pasta this way, it really is hard to go back to the old giant-pot-on-the-stove routine.
For this method, I used a 1 lb box of rotelli spiral pasta, which is 16 oz. You’ll need around 4 1/2 to 5 cups of water, depending on the shape and brand of pasta. The main thing is that the water needs to cover the top of the pasta before you pressure cook it.
Don’t fall for those tempting ‘no-drain’ recipes out there, they rarely work well and overcook the pasta.
For softer fully cooked pasta, 5 minutes on high pressure works beautifully. For firmer al dente pasta, especially if you want to use it in pasta salad, reduce the cook time by 1 minute.
Also just a quick note about salt before we start. We personally do not salt the cooking water because some members of our family are navigating health issues and it’s easier for us to season individual portions afterwards instead.
But if you normally salt your pasta water, you absolutely still can.

Sneak Peak!
Sometimes you need to see the end product before you commit to making it, right?! So here’s a quick glimpse of how it turned out for me today along with the recipe at a glance!
Equipment
- Instant Pot 6 or 8 qt pressure cooker
- Measuring jug
- Silicone spatula
- Colander
Available on Amazon.com [ad]
Ingredients
Serves 4 to 6:
- 1 lb rotelli spiral pasta, 16 oz / 454g
- 4 1/2 to 5 cups water, enough to cover the pasta
Step-By-Step Instructions
Step one: Add the pasta to the Instant Pot

Pour the dry rotelli spiral pasta into the insert of your Instant Pot.
Try to spread the pasta out fairly evenly across the bottom of the pot instead of leaving it piled in one big mound.
Because rotelli has those little curves and ridges, it can stack up a bit more than smoother pasta shapes. Spreading it out helps the water reach everything properly.
Step two: Add the water
Pour 4 1/2 cups of water over the pasta.
Check the top of the pasta before closing the lid. The pasta should be just covered.
If any pieces are sitting above the water line, add a little more water until the tops are covered. You may need closer to 5 cups depending on the brand and exact shape of the pasta.
Do not worry if it looks like a lot of water. The pasta needs enough liquid to pressure cook evenly, and you will drain off any extra after cooking.
Step three: Gently press the pasta down
Use a silicone spatula or spoon to gently press the rotelli down into the water.
You do not need to stir aggressively. Just make sure the pasta is mostly submerged so you do not end up with a few firmer pieces on top.
This tiny step makes a big difference.
Step four: Seal the lid

Place the insert into the Instant Pot if it is not already inside.
Secure the lid and make sure the valve is turned to SEAL.
The Instant Pot will take a few minutes to come to pressure before the cook time begins counting down.
Step five: Pressure cook
Cook on HIGH pressure for:
- 5 minutes for softer fully cooked rotelli
- 4 minutes for firmer al dente pasta
I prefer the 5 minute timing for regular hot dinners with sauce because it gives you tender pasta that works well with spaghetti sauce, Alfredo, butter, or cheese.
For pasta salad, I would go with 4 minutes so the spirals stay a little firmer after chilling.
Step six: Quick release immediately
As soon as the cooking time finishes, carefully perform a QUICK RELEASE.
Keep your hands and face away from the steam vent.

Pasta can keep softening if it sits under pressure too long, so do not leave it sitting on warm for ages after cooking.
Quick release is what helps keep the texture where you want it.
Step seven: Open and stir
Once the pressure pin drops, carefully open the lid.
Stir the pasta immediately using a silicone spatula.
This helps separate the spirals while they are still hot and stops them from clumping together in the pot.
Step eight: Drain the pasta
Pour the cooked rotelli into a colander and drain off the extra water.
A little leftover water in the pot is completely normal. Different brands of pasta absorb slightly different amounts.
The important thing is that the pasta cooked evenly and is tender enough for your meal.

Step nine: Serve hot or cool for pasta salad
Serve the rotelli straight away with your favorite sauce, butter, parmesan, shredded cheese, garlic butter, or Alfredo.
For pasta salad, rinse the drained pasta briefly under cool water, drain well, then toss with your dressing and add-ins.
Step ten: Adjust next time if needed
Pasta brands can vary.
If your rotelli is a little firmer than you like, add 1 extra minute next time.
If it comes out softer than you prefer, reduce the cook time by 1 minute.
Once you know the exact timing your family likes, this becomes one of those repeat kitchen shortcuts you can use without thinking too hard.

FAQ
Can I salt the water?
Yes. We personally season after cooking, but you can salt the water if that is how you normally cook pasta.
Can I use broth instead of water?
Yes. Chicken broth or vegetable broth adds extra flavor, but remember it also adds extra cost.
Can I double the recipe?
You can double it in an 8 qt Instant Pot, but do not fill past the recommended max fill line.
Is this good for pasta salad?
Yes. Use the 4 minute cook time for firmer pasta, then rinse and cool before adding dressing.
Do I need oil in the Instant Pot?
No. Pasta and water are enough and help prevent the very large amounts of starchy water that can bubble out. You can add a tiny drizzle of olive oil after cooking if storing leftovers.
