How to Elevate and Spice Up Your Chex Mix Holiday Party Snack With Some Tasty Chipotle Sauce and a Smoker!

Hi! If you’ve been following me for long you’ll already know this, but for those who are new, welcome to Far From The Farm. I’m Mona, the Brit behind the recipes, learning life and food in the States while sharing our debt-free journey and what’s on the menu in our home today!

This week I had the chance to spend some time with my in-laws, and as they were getting their annual party snacks ready for the season, they introduced me to a new twist on the classic Chex Mix recipe using their Traeger.

They took the traditional version right off the side of the Chex box, added a little more Worcestershire sauce for depth, and it was fantastic!

I’ve tweaked the recipe here for our family’s taste. My husband loves a good kick of heat in his snacks, so with just a little chipotle sauce it adds just enough to bring that smoky warmth through every crunchy bite.

The Traeger pellet grill is truly the star here. It gives the mix a slow, rich, smoky flavor that’s impossible to get from the oven. As someone from the UK, where pellet grills aren’t all that common, this was my first time cooking with one, and I’m officially converted.

I’m convinced you could toss almost anything in there and it would come out tasting elevated.

Making Chex Mix on the smoker is a whole new level of tasty!

I’ve been feeling homesick for Britain lately, so being here and cooking with my in-laws has meant a lot. They always treat me like family and share their recipes, stories, and traditions with me, which makes me feel less far away from home and my own loved ones.

It’s one of those small blessings that reminds me that good food and kind people can make anywhere feel like home.

If you’re lucky enough to have friends or in-laws who feed you and fold you into their family traditions, give them a shout-out in the comments below. And if you’re planning a get-together or game day soon, this smoky Traeger Chex Mix is going to be the hit of your snack table!

As always, these photos are from my real kitchen, or in this case, right from the yard beside my in-laws’ smoker. No staged lighting or spotless counters. Just real life, real people, and good food made with love. Proof that you can make amazing things without needing fancy equipment or a picture-perfect kitchen.

So grab your roasting pan, fire up the Traeger, and join me as we make this ridiculously addictive, smoky, spicy snack that disappears faster than you think!

Step 6: Close the Traeger lid and smoke for about 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes to make sure all the pieces toast evenly. The mix should be crisp, fragrant, and lightly golden when done.

Step 7: After 1 hour stir the mix again and reduce the temperature to 140°F and close the lid for another 20 minutes. This step adds extra smokiness to the flavor without burning the cereal.

Step 8: Remove the pan carefully (it’ll be hot!) and spread the mix out onto parchment paper or a large baking sheet to cool. It will crisp up even more as it cools.

Notes and Troubleshooting

Notes:

  • Adjust the spice level by adding more or less chipotle sauce.
  • Try adding bagel chips or goldfish crackers for a fun variation.
  • Don’t skip stirring every 15 minutes. It’s what keeps the mix crunchy and evenly coated.
  • Make this a little more budget-friendly by skipping the mixed nuts. Either leave them out completely or replace them with more of the frugal peanut options.

Troubleshooting:

  • If it’s too salty, balance with a sprinkle of brown sugar or toss in some extra unsalted cereal.
  • If it’s too spicy, mix in an extra cup or two of plain Chex to mellow the flavor.

Storage

  • Store cooled mix in airtight containers or gallon-sized bags at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
  • It also freezes well. Just thaw uncovered so it stays crisp.

Serving Ideas

  • Perfect for holiday snack trays or gift bags.
  • Serve in small bowls for movie nights or tailgate parties.
  • Crush slightly and use as a topping for mac and cheese or baked potatoes.
