A Quick, Budget-Friendly Sweet Puppy Chow Snack Mix with Chocolate, Peanuts, and Pretzels!
If you’ve been following me for long you’ll already know this but for those who are new, welcome to Far From The Farm! I’m Mona, the Brit behind the recipes, learning life and food in the States while sharing our debt-free journey and what’s for dinner (or in this case, snack time!) in our home today!
Today my husband introduced me to the American snack that is the homemade Chex Mix. Apparently, every family has their own version, and you can change them up with seasonal candies to make them extra fun for holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas.
We didn’t have a family recipe to fall back on, so we checked out this Southern Christmas Sweet and Salty Trail Mix from my sweet friend Samantha over at Dreams of Grace and Grit blog, and used it as our base while we looked at what we already had in the pantry.
We’re on a pretty strict budget this month as we keep working through Baby Step 2 of our debt-free journey, so the goal was to make something fun and cozy without spending extra.

We didn’t quite have everything her version used, so we improvised a little, and it turned out amazing.
My husband suggested we make three kinds, and I wasn’t mad about that idea at all! This one is the first version we made: a classic chocolate and peanut Chex party mix made puppy chow style. It’s sweet, salty, crunchy, and coated in that perfect layer of powdered sugar that makes it feel like a treat from a bake sale or old-fashioned family gathering.
We hope you enjoy this easy snack mix as much as we did! Feel free to share your family’s Chex Mix or puppy chow combos in the comments. And don’t miss our Chocolate Cluster Chex Mix and Plain Classic Chocolate and Peanut Chex Mix recipes too – they’re just as addictive!
As always, these photos are from my real kitchen here in our sweet military base home. No staged lighting or spotless marble counters. Just real life and real food made in a small space. Proof that you can feed your family well without needing a dream kitchen or fancy tools!

Equipment
- Large bowl
- Spatula or spoon
- Mixing bowls
- Parchment paper
- Baking sheet
- Large glass jar or airtight container
- 1 large resealable food bag
Available on Amazon.com [ad]

Ingredients (Makes 1 Batch)
- 1 ¼ cups pretzel twists
- 1 ¼ cups Honey Nut Chex cereal
- 1 cup Honey Nut Cheerios
- ½ cup honey roasted peanuts
- 4.5 oz of any M&M’s you prefer (we mixed two kinds)
- ¾ cup Hershey’s Kisses (unwrapped)
- 1 cup chocolate chips (we used semi-sweet)
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- ½ cup powdered sugar
Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: In a large bowl, add the pretzel twists, Chex cereal, Cheerios, peanuts, M&M’s, and unwrapped Hershey Kisses. Give everything a good mix so the ingredients are evenly distributed.
Step 2: In a small microwave-safe bowl, combine your chocolate chips and vegetable oil. Microwave for 60 seconds, stir, then continue heating in 30-second intervals until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
Step 3: Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the cereal and toss gently with a spatula until everything is coated. Try not to crush the cereal, just fold until it’s all glossy and covered.

Step 4: Add your powdered sugar into a large resealable food bag. Scoop in the chocolate-covered mix, seal the bag, and shake until everything is coated evenly in the sugar.

Step 5: Spread the mix out on parchment paper to cool for a few minutes, then store in jars or airtight containers. Serve and enjoy!

Notes and Troubleshooting
Notes:
If you want to switch things up, try adding peanut butter chips, mini marshmallows, or seasonal M&M’s. You can even make this festive for Christmas or Valentine’s Day by swapping the candy colors.
Troubleshooting:
If your chocolate seizes up or thickens too quickly, add a teaspoon of oil and stir gently until smooth again.
Storage
Store your puppy chow mix in airtight jars, snack bags, or containers for up to a week at room temperature. If it’s humid, keep it in the fridge to prevent the chocolate from melting.
Serving Ideas
- Serve this mix in paper cups for parties or family movie nights.
- It’s also perfect for gifting in mason jars tied with ribbon during the holidays!
