Easy Slow Cooker Spaghetti Sauce with Pantry Staples for Busy Families On a Budget
There are days when grocery budgets feel impossibly tight. I’m talking about those $15-or-less meals that still need to feed four to six hungry people.
Hey, if that’s you right now, please know you’re doing an amazing job. Getting dinner on the table without going into debt for takeout? That’s a win.
This is one of my favorite frugal tips. Take a couple jars of plain old spaghetti sauce, add a few smart pantry seasonings, and give it time in the slow cooker.
That slow cooking is the magic. It somehow deepens and riches the flavor, smooths out the texture, and turns budget sauce into something rich and hearty that tastes like it simmered all day on your stove.
Nobody will guess you started with store-bought!

We’re a military family, so you’ll see Freedom’s Choice pop up in our kitchen. It’s the Commissary brand, affordable and dependable. But truly, any jarred sauce that your family eats will work just fine.
Equipment You’ll Need
- Slow Cooker or Instant Pot Pro with Slow Cooker function (I use both my 6Qt and 8Qt depending on how many leftovers I want)
- Large skillet for browning ground beef
- Wooden spoon or spatula for stirring
- Measuring spoons
- Ladle for serving
Available on Amazon.com [ad]
Ingredients (Serves 4–6)
- 2 lbs ground beef, browned and drained
- 2 jars (24 oz each) spaghetti or tomato-based pasta sauce
- 2 tbsp Italian seasoning
- 2 tbsp garlic spread seasoning (I’ll link my favorite brand below and one jar has lasted my family about 8 months using it a couple times a week and makes all the difference in recipes)
- Optional: ½ tsp dried red pepper flakes if your crew likes heat

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1 – Brown the beef
In a skillet (or if you’re using the Instant Pot you can use the Sauté function), cook the ground beef until no pink remains. Drain off extra fat.
Step 2 – Load the slow cooker
Transfer the beef into your slow cooker or Instant Pot with slow cooker function.

Step 3 – Add sauce and seasonings
Pour in both jars of pasta sauce. Stir in Italian seasoning, garlic spread seasoning, and optional red pepper flakes. Mix until combined.

Step 4 – Slow cook the magic
- In a standard slow cooker: cook on LOW for 8–10 hours.
- In the Instant Pot slow cook function: cook on HIGH for 8–10 hours.

Step 5 – Serve
Stir before serving. Ladle over fresh pasta and enjoy!

Budget Tip
If you really need to stretch the meal, toss the cooked pasta straight into the pot at the end and mix it all together. It goes further than plating pasta and spooning sauce on top. I can’t explain why, but it works!
Serving Suggestion
We love serving this with our own fresh homemade pasta. It makes the whole meal feel extra special, even when we’re still on a budget.

Storage
- Fridge: Keeps up to 3 days in an airtight container.
- Freezer: Store in freezer bags or containers for up to 1 month. Reheat in a saucepan or back in the slow cooker.
Troubleshooting
- My sauce tastes bland – Try adding a little extra garlic spread seasoning or a splash of balsamic vinegar to brighten the flavor.
- The sauce is too thick – Stir in a small amount of water or broth until you reach your preferred consistency.
- The sauce is too runny – Leave the lid off the slow cooker for the last 30 to 60 minutes to let some liquid evaporate.
- It cooked too long and tastes strong – Balance it out with a pinch of sugar or drizzle of honey to mellow the acidity.
- Family doesn’t like spice – Skip the red pepper flakes and add a little extra Italian seasoning for flavor without heat.
