How to Fill Your Freezer with Homemade Leftover Sourdough Bread and Make Garlic Texas Toast!
Meal prep a bundle of crispy, buttery garlic toast that is ready to cook straight from the freezer!
Hi! If you’ve been following me for long you’ll already know this, but for those who are new, welcome to Far From The Farm. I’m Mona, the Brit behind the recipes, learning life and food in the States while sharing our debt-free journey and what’s on the menu in our home today!
I always keep slices of sourdough bread in the freezer. It started as one of those small, practical things.
We’ve been enjoying fresh sourdough a lot lately as Julie from Our Beautiful Chaos has kindly been gifting us with the most delicious loaves. So, when I have sourdough bread getting close to the end I just slice it up and freeze it instead of letting it go to waste.
And it’s actually been so handy having it there ready for toast whenever we need it.
Then I started seeing those viral homemade Texas Toast videos popping up everywhere. Thick slices of bread loaded up with butter and garlic, baked until golden. Simple.
I set about trying to find the perfect Sourdough Garlic Texas Toast recipe to use up my leftover sourdough bread, and that would use real ingredients rather than the store-bought kind full of additives and preservatives.

A bit of softened butter, garlic, parsley, and suddenly those frozen slices turned into something completely different. Something you actually look forward to pulling out of the freezer.
We love this way more than the store-bought version.
You can add cheese if you want, leave the crusts on if that’s your thing, or do what we’ve been doing lately and trim them off. We’ve got someone in the house going through a bit of a texture phase at the moment, so small tweaks like that make a difference.
As a military family working through baby step 2 of our debt free journey, this is exactly the kind of thing we lean into. Simple changes that stretch what we already have. No waste. No extra spending. Just making what we’ve got work harder.
And just a reminder that if you’re struggling and you need help with managing your budget or starting your own debt free journey then here’s some FREE resources below you may find helpful!

Ingredients
- 8 to 10 slices thick cut sourdough bread
- 1 cup salted butter, softened
- 1 tbsp dried parsley
- 2 tbsp minced garlic
- 2 tbsp grated parmesan cheese
- Pinch salt
Optional: 1/4 cup shredded cheese per slice just before cooking.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step One: Prep your bread

Take 8 to 10 thick slices of sourdough bread.
Fresh or frozen both work here. I usually grab mine straight from the freezer because I’ve been keeping sliced sourdough on hand for toast anyway, and it saves anything going to waste.
You can leave the crusts on or take them off. We’ve been cutting ours off lately as we’ve got someone in the house who is struggling a bit with textures right now, but either way works just fine.
Step Two: Make the garlic butter

In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, minced garlic, dried parsley, pinch of salt and grated parmesan cheese.
Stir until everything is evenly combined.
Step Three: Butter the slices

Spread the garlic butter over one side of each slice. Be generous. This is where all the flavor comes from.
Step Four: Flash freeze

Place the slices buttered side up on a baking sheet.
Put the tray into the freezer for about 1 hour.
This step matters. It stops them sticking together later.
Step Five: Store for later

Transfer the frozen slices into a large freezer bag. Label it so you actually remember what it is when it comes to grabbing a quick snack.
Stack flat and keep in the freezer.
Step Six: Cook when needed
Take out as many slices as you need straight from frozen.
- Air Fryer: 360°F for 6 to 7 minutes
- Oven: 350°F for 9 to 11 minutes
Keep an eye on them. You want golden edges, not overly dark.
Tip: If adding cheese, do it right before cooking. It doesn’t freeze well on top as it tends to fall off.
