Easy Fall Dog Cookies to Bake Freeze and Gift This Holiday Season!

If you’ve been following me for long you’ll already know this but for those who are new, welcome to Far From The Farm. I’m Mona, the Brit behind the recipes, learning life and food in the States while sharing our debt-free journey, and what’s cooking in our home today!

My mother-in-law is one of those people who goes BIG for the holidays, and she never forgets the family pets! Every year she bakes her famous Big Batch Pumpkin Peanut Butter Bone Dog Cookies, and today I got to help her make them.

These treats are simple, wholesome, and completely dog-safe, made with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.

Pumpkin is full of fiber and great for digestion, peanut butter gives that irresistible nutty flavor dogs go crazy for, and using whole wheat flour adds a bit of hearty texture.

I love that these are not only fun to make but also budget-friendly, which always matters on our family’s current debt-free journey as every little helps, right?!

And just a reminder that if you’re struggling and you need help with managing your budget or starting your own debt free journey then here’s some FREE resources below you may find helpful!

Be sure to double-check your peanut butter label before using it. You’ll want one that’s completely free from xylitol or artificial sweeteners, as those are unsafe for dogs. We always use a natural, creamy peanut butter with no added sugar.

For convenience, my mother-in-law bakes these in her countertop oven, the same one she uses for her people-cookies and baking, and it works beautifully. I’d never seen one back in the UK so it just tickles the heck out of me to use this dinky wee oven when I get to bake with her!

You can absolutely bake them in a conventional oven too, just keep your rack in the center so they bake evenly without browning too much.

Baking homemade dog treats is such a sweet seasonal tradition, especially when you’re trying to save money and give thoughtful gifts. These make wonderful presents for friends, neighbors, or fellow pet owners during the holidays.

Grab eggs, dog-safe peanut butter, pumpkin and wholewheat flour and let’s get baking!

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 (15 oz) can pumpkin puree
  • 1 ½ cups smooth dog-safe peanut butter
  • 6 cups whole wheat flour

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1. Preheat the oven.

Set your oven (or countertop oven) to 350°F while you prep the dough.

Step 2. Beat the eggs.

Crack the eggs into a large mixing bowl and beat with a fork or whisk, until smooth and slightly frothy.

Whisk the eggs then add in your pumpkin and peanut butter.

Step 3. Add the peanut butter and pumpkin.

Scoop in your peanut butter and pumpkin puree. Use a handheld mixer to combine until smooth and creamy.

Mix the eggs, pumpkin and peanut butter until light and fluffy.

Step 4. Add the flour gradually.

Work in the flour one cup at a time, stirring between each addition. The dough will look dry at this stage, but don’t be tempted to add any extra liquid. It’s supposed to be thick and firm for rolling.

A handheld mixer really helps with the recipe because it’s quite a dry, stiff dough to work by hand.

Step 5. Roll out the dough.

Because this dough isn’t sticky, you probably won’t need to flour your surface, though you can if you prefer. Roll the dough out to about ¼-inch thickness.

My mother-in-law uses a rolling pin with built-in thickness guides, and I loved it so much that I’ve added it to my must-buy list, as it takes all the guesswork out!

Roll the dough out to 1/4″ inch thickness.

Step 6. Cut your cookies.

Use a bone-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the treats, placing each on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. You can fit a lot per tray since they don’t spread much while baking.

Bone-shaped cookie cutters are perfect for this dog treat!

Step 7. Bake the cookies.

Bake for about 15 minutes at 350°F. Adjust slightly if your cookie cutter is larger or smaller than the standard size. The goal is firm but not over-crisp.

Bake for about 15 minutes for a medium-sized cookie.

Step 8. Cool completely.

Let the cookies cool fully before packaging or storing. They’ll firm up even more as they cool, creating that perfect crunch dogs love.

Notes and Troubleshooting

Notes:

  • These treats are safe for dogs as long as your peanut butter does not contain xylitol or artificial sweeteners.
  • You can substitute oat flour if your dog is sensitive to wheat.
  • Feel free to make smaller cookies for little dogs, just shorten the bake time by a couple of minutes.

Troubleshooting:

  • If your dough feels too crumbly, mix in a small spoonful of peanut butter to help bind it together.

Storage

Store baked cookies in an airtight container for up to one week, or refrigerate for longer freshness.

You can also freeze the uncooked dough in portioned balls for easy baking later.

Serving Ideas

Gift them to fellow pet owners, take them to a holiday party for furry guests, or keep them on hand for daily treats.
