Packing tips for the travelling entrepreneur

Traveling long distances can be both exciting and daunting. Over the last 4 years hopping between the UK and the USA, I’ve developed a few packing strategies that make these trips much more manageable and mean that I arrive fresh and ready to work on my blog wherever I am.

Today, I’m sharing 13 easy tips that you might want to incorporate on your next long-haul journey as a travelling entrepreneur! [ad] All the links included in this article are affiliate links from the Amazon website:

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to lug around a heavy carry-on bag. In fact, I take pride in having the bare minimum in my carry-on. My essentials? Passport, purse, cash, keys, spectacles, and chargers. This minimalist approach means I never stress the weight restrictions some of the airlines put in place and risk having my luggage placed in the hold. Plus, it gives me so much more freedom in shopping at the airport without needing to manage 5 additional plastic bags. Trust me, try it! I’m currently obsessed with the pretty feminine options in the [ad] BAGSMART range from Amazon.com – I want them all!

A capsule wardrobe is a game-changer for long trips. Choose versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Think neutral colors and classic styles. This not only saves space but also ensures you’re stylishly prepared for any occasion.

I can highly recommend the entire product line from [ad] PRETTYGARDEN from Amazon.com. I travel with 4 or 5 of these versatile casual (but-not-so-casual that you can’t go out to eat in them) outfits, they wash really well and their pretty hardy and snag-avoidant too. They stock everything from small up to 3XL and are super comfy.

Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save a significant amount of space in your suitcase. It also helps to minimize wrinkles, which is a huge bonus when you’re living out of a suitcase for an extended period.

Packing cubes are a lifesaver. They help you stay organized and make packing and unpacking a breeze. You can categorize your clothing and accessories, making it easier to find what you need without rummaging through your entire suitcase. Plus there’s the added bonus of not having to worry about your shoes marking your clothes or your toiletries spilling out (more importantly that bottle of wine you’re planning to bring home with you. I see you!)

It’s hard to beat the prices and value for money that [ad] BAGAIL from Amazon.com offer, there’s nearly always a coupon and just look at the sheer volume they offer in their organizer sets.

Having a toiletry bag packed with travel-sized essentials saves time and ensures you don’t forget anything important. I always keep [ad] these travel bottles and bag from Mrsdry from Amazon.com on hand when I travel as I prefer not to have to buy special mini-sized products just for the trip. This way I have my favorites on hand wherever I am.

I get so cold on a plane! To combat this and to save precious space in my suitcase, I wear my bulkiest items on the plane. This usually means my heaviest shoes, coat, and any thick layers like scarves depending on the destination and season. Not only does this free up space, but it also keeps me warm and comfortable during the flight.

Having a good travel adapter is essential. Make sure you have one that works in your destination country, and consider bringing a multi-port USB charger to keep all your devices powered up. I personally recommend [ad] this one by EPICKA from Amazon.com because I don’t like having to carry a bunch of different chargers with me if I’m heading to the UK and Europe and the US in the same week.

Staying hydrated during long flights is crucial. Pack an empty reusable water bottle and fill it up after passing through security. It’s eco-friendly and ensures you have water on hand throughout your journey.

I always make sure mine are clear (just makes it easier at security) and you really can’t beat the pretty designs and price on these [ad] Home Tune bottles from Amazon.com – I want them all!

Airplane food can be hit or miss, so I always pack a few of my favorite snacks. Think nuts, granola bars, or dried fruit. Having a little something to munch on can make a long flight much more pleasant.

Now to be transparent I am a total SUGAR ADDICT and there are days that I really have to force myself to eat savoury foods instead of just sweet things. But I have to say throwing a few salty snacks in the mix, especially when travelling longhaul, really does help to limit the blow out food binges and subsequent stomach ache that I’m prone too. So throw some chips in the mix in between the candy!

Layering is key for long-haul flights. Airplane cabins can be unpredictable in terms of temperature. Start with a base layer and add or remove clothing as needed. A cozy scarf or shawl can double as a blanket if you get chilly.

It can be pretty hit and miss if you get a blanket on a flight these days, and they’re pretty small. I get so cold quickly on a plane and then I struggle to get comfortable and sleep. To solve this I always carry my own little pashmina that can double as a blanket on the plane and a cozy cover-up at the airport. My current faves are anything by [ad] DEMDACO from Amazon.com they’ve really nailed the chic aspect of the pashmina and their textured knits are divine.

Scenting your luggage is a delightful way to keep your clothes smelling fresh. Place a few drops of your favorite essential oil on some cotton makeup removal pads and tuck them into your suitcase. This not only makes opening your luggage a pleasure but also helps protect your clothes from musty odors, especially if your hotel room isn’t the freshest.

Alternatively these ready to go scented sachets by [ad] FloralSimplicity from Amazon.com are utterly yummy. I especially like their tropical infusion range for if I’m travelling to a more tropical destination as it seems to cut through the musty luggage smells really well.

It seems we all carry power banks – [ad ] check out this super cute one by Yoobao from Amazon.com – as a staple when travelling – but have you ever thought to include a [ad] wireless charger from Amazon.com too? Honestly this is such a ready-win to have at hand.

Wireless chargers works for most cell phones and ensures you’re not caught without a way to charge your devices, especially during long layovers or in places where outlets might be scarce or if the kids have lost/damaged their chargers (TOTAL NIGHTMARE SCENARIO USUALLY RIGHT??!!!) Be the Queen of Serene even when hit by little bumps on the way with my [ad] lightweight best value wireless charger from Amazon.com

Ok this might be more for the super Type A personalities like me but honestly is there anything worse than arriving home completely exhausted only to have to plough through smelly clothes to do the laundry?

I easily solve this by packing a few empty plastic bags for your dirty laundry. This keeps your clean clothes separate and organized, and smells contained and away from any fresh clean clothes.

You can also add a few drops of essential oils to some cotton makeup remover pads and place them in the bags to keep your laundry smelling fresh, or one of those [ad] scent packets from Amazon.com I mentioned earlier – you’ll thank me later!

Alright, you’re all set!

Packing for long-haul trips doesn’t have to be stressful. By following these tips, you can make the process more efficient and enjoyable. Embrace minimalism, stay organized, and prioritize comfort and convenience. Safe travels, and enjoy your next adventure across the pond or wherever your journeys may take you!

Remember, the key to successful travel for the busy entrepreneur is preparation and a positive mindset. Happy packing!
