Easy Breakfast Pigs in Bacon Blankets

Easy British Style Pigs in Blankets You Can Enjoy for Breakfast!

As a Brit living in the States, I’ve had my fair share of cultural food mix-ups, but this one might be my favourite story yet.

When my husband casually announced one evening that he’d handle dinner and make pigs in blankets, I was thrilled.

My mind immediately filled with images of Christmas Day back home. Golden roast turkey, roasted potatoes, and little chipolata sausages wrapped in crisp streaky bacon…

You can imagine my surprise when what landed on the table that night was… hot dogs wrapped in crescent roll dough. American pigs in blankets!

To be fair, they were tasty in their own way, but my heart dropped just a little. It wasn’t the cozy Christmas comfort food I had been picturing.

Here’s the thing: British pigs in blankets and American pigs in blankets are two very different dishes.

In the UK, pigs in blankets are those little bacon-wrapped chipolatas that make Christmas dinner complete.

In the US, pigs in blankets usually mean hot dogs or small sausages wrapped in dough, often served at parties or for brunch. Both delicious, but they’re not the same thing at all.

I wanted to bring the British version to my American kitchen, but sourcing chipolatas over here has been a real challenge. After some trial and error, I found that breakfast sausage links are a pretty great stand-in.

Troubleshooting

Bacon not crisping? Bake on a rack set over your tray so the fat drips down.

Sausages splitting? Try pricking them lightly with a fork before wrapping to let steam escape.

Too greasy? Choose a leaner cut of bacon or blot gently with paper towels before serving.
